Overview

Adolescence is the developmental period of transition from childhood to adulthood, beginning with the onset of puberty and extending into the early twenties, during which profound physical, hormonal, neurocognitive, emotional, and social changes occur. It is characterized biologically by sexual maturation and continued brain development, particularly the protracted maturation of prefrontal regulatory regions relative to subcortical emotional and reward systems, and psychosocially by the consolidation of identity, growing autonomy, intensified peer relationships, and evolving moral and abstract reasoning. Adolescence is a sensitive window for the emergence of psychiatric disorders and for the establishment of health behaviors with lifelong consequences. Research relevant to this topic examines the role of mental functions and autobiographical memory in identity development and the prevention of identity diffusion, aggressiveness, and depression among adolescents, identity reorganization in adolescent mothers, empowerment programs and perceptions of gender equity, retrospective study of childhood behavioral patterns, and the influence of maternal behavior on attachment-related stress responses. Related work addresses adolescent nutrition, hypertension, and sexual and reproductive rights. Collectively these studies span the psychological, behavioral, and physical dimensions of this transitional stage. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research on adolescent development, identity, mental health, and behavior, reflecting the central importance of adolescence within Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
