Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is a retrovirus that infects cells of the human immune system and damages the body's ability to fight off infections and diseases. HIV is the cause of Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS), a life-threatening condition that has resulted in millions of deaths worldwide. Early diagnosis, treatment and prevention are the key strategies for managing HIV. Effective treatments can enable people living with HIV to lead long and healthy lives.
