Overview

Huntington Disease (HD) is an inherited, progressive neurological disorder that affects the brain and causes physical and cognitive symptoms. HD affects about 1 in 10,000 individuals worldwide and usually begins in middle age. Symptoms include chorea (involuntary, jerky movements of the hands, feet, and face), cognitive impairments, behavioral changes, and a range of psychological problems. HD is caused by a mutation in a single gene and is progressive, meaning that it worsens with time as more neurons become affected. HD cannot be cured, but there are medications and therapies available to help manage symptoms and improve quality of life.
