Overview
Cancer stem cells are a small subset of cancer cells that have the capacity to both self-renew and generate the full spectrum of cancer cell types found in a given tumor. They are thought to play a major role in cancer progression and the development of drug resistance in cancer therapies. Consequently, cancer stem cells are seen as potential targets for prevention and treatment strategies. Research into cancer stem cells has potential to revolutionize how cancer is treated and detected, and as such, has been the subject of intense research in recent years.
