Breastfeeding Benefits
Breastfeeding is the natural practice of a mother providing her breast milk to her infant. The many benefits of breastfeeding to both mother and infant are well-documented and are significant for the long-term health and development of both. Not only does it provide the baby with an easily digestible source of nutrition that is tailored to their needs, but it can also aid in the strengthening of the bond between mother and baby. Research has also highlighted that breastfeeding can aid in reducing the risk of certain conditions in babies such as asthma, ear infections and gastrointestinal issues, as well as reducing the risk of diabetes and obesity later in life. In terms of maternal benefits, breastfeeding can reduce the risk of breast and ovarian cancer and help with the mother’s recovery after childbirth. Additionally, breastfeeding can help the mother save money on formula and save time in both preparing and cleaning up. The World Health Organization advocates breastmilk as the best source of nutrition for babies under six months, and recommends exclusive breastfeeding up until that point.
