Overview

Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in women and it occurs when malignant (cancerous) cells grow and form tumors in the breast. It can affect both men and women, although women are one hundred times more likely to develop it. Breast cancer is caused by a combination of genetic, environmental and lifestyle factors. Early detection and treatment can greatly improve the prognosis of breast cancer. Treatments may include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation and hormone therapy. Research is ongoing to develop new treatments and to identify possible risk factors.
