Cerebrospinal Fluid

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is a clear fluid that surrounds and cushions the brain and spinal cord, providing critical protection and helping to maintain the correct environment for proper nervous system functioning. It helps to circulate vital nutrients and chemicals to the brain and spinal cord, remove waste products, and balance electrolytes. CSF also helps to protect the brain and spinal cord from trauma, infection, and dehydration. Abnormalities in CSF can indicate neurological disease and help to diagnose conditions such as hydrocephalus and meningitis.
