Overview
Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is a clear, colorless fluid that surrounds and bathes the brain and spinal cord and fills the ventricles within the brain. Produced mainly by the choroid plexus, it cushions the central nervous system against mechanical injury, supports the buoyancy of the brain, delivers nutrients, removes metabolic waste, and helps regulate the chemical environment around neural tissue. CSF circulates through the ventricular system and the spaces surrounding the brain and spinal cord before being reabsorbed into the bloodstream, and disturbances in its production, flow, or absorption can lead to conditions such as hydrocephalus and raised intracranial pressure. Because CSF is in direct contact with the central nervous system, its analysis is a vital diagnostic tool: examining a sample obtained by lumbar puncture can reveal infection, bleeding, inflammation, and the spread of malignant cells, which is especially important in the assessment of brain and spinal tumors and central nervous system disease. Research relevant to this topic in the journal Brain And Spinal Cancer and affiliated titles includes work on central nervous system infections, meningitis, and other intracranial and spinal conditions. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to cerebrospinal fluid and disorders of the brain and spinal cord.
