Protein Structure Databases
Protein structure databases are comprehensive collections of data that represent the three-dimensional structures of various proteins. They are essential for understanding protein functions, as protein structure holds vital information in understanding how it binds to other molecules, and how it interacts with, and influences, its environment. Researchers use these databases to search for structural motifs, structural features, and structural patterns in proteins, which can then be used to identify and investigate the cellular mechanisms involved in the interactions of proteins and other molecules. This information is used to develop new medicines, develop new treatments, and design new drugs. Protein structure databases are also used in protein engineering, in which they can be used to search for existing protein structures to develop new proteins with enhanced functions.
