Overview
Microbiology is the scientific study of microorganisms, the living entities too small to be seen with the unaided eye, including bacteria, archaea, fungi, protozoa, algae, and the acellular viruses. As a discipline it examines how these organisms grow, reproduce, exchange genetic material, cause or prevent disease, and interact with their environments and with larger hosts. Microbiology underpins much of modern science and medicine: it informs the diagnosis and treatment of infectious disease, the discovery and stewardship of antibiotics, the development of vaccines, the assurance of food and water safety, and the use of microbes in industrial fermentation, bioremediation, and biotechnology. Laboratory techniques such as culturing, staining, microscopy, biochemical assays, and increasingly molecular and genomic methods allow researchers to identify and characterize individual species and microbial communities. The field is commonly subdivided into branches such as bacteriology, virology, mycology, parasitology, and immunology. Within the broad scope of Biotechnology and Biomedical Science, microbiology connects fundamental cellular and molecular biology to applied work in health, materials, and the life sciences. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to the study of microorganisms and their biomedical and biotechnological applications.
