Overview
Marine biotechnology is the application of cutting-edge scientific tools and technologies to explore the ocean and its vast array of living organisms for new, useful products and capabilities for human benefit. Marine biotechnology enables us to address global issues such as climate change, marine pollution and sustainable aquaculture. It is being used to develop new drugs, understand the impacts of climate change, create renewable energy sources, design advanced materials and devices, and develop healthier fish products. With the advances in genetics, biochemistry and other fields, marine biotechnology stands to provide new solutions and new knowledge of the ocean’s diverse species and ecosystems.
