Heterosis
Heterosis is an evolutionary phenomenon in which hybrid offspring exhibit better traits than their parents. It is also referred to as hybrid vigor, and it is most commonly observed in plants, but it may also occur in animals. Heterosis is responsible for increases in growth rates, yield, nutrition, fertility, disease resistance and general adaptability in the hybrid offspring. Heterosis is often preferred in plant breeding, as it allows for the rapid improvement of desirable traits in agricultural crops. This technique is widely used in modern agriculture, and it is considered to be an important factor in the success of agricultural production.
