Bioreactors are engineered vessels or systems in which biological processes—typically the metabolic activity of microorganisms, cells, or enzymes—are carried out under controlled conditions to produce a desired product or to transform substances. They are central to biotechnology, biomedical science, and environmental engineering, providing regulated environments for parameters such as temperature, pH, oxygen, and mixing so that biological reactions proceed efficiently. Applications range from producing pharmaceuticals, fermented products, and biofuels to treating wastewater. In environmental engineering, membrane bioreactors combine biological degradation with membrane filtration to treat industrial and municipal effluent; their performance is often monitored through indicators such as biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and chemical oxygen demand (COD), which together gauge organic load and biodegradability. High salinity, pollutant concentration, and operating conditions can all influence treatment outcomes. Key aspects include reactor design and operating conditions, microbial activity, mass transfer, scale-up, and performance monitoring.
