Overview
Biochemistry is the study of the chemical processes and molecules that constitute and sustain living organisms. It examines how biomolecules, proteins, nucleic acids, carbohydrates, and lipids, are built, broken down, and transformed, and how these reactions are organized into the metabolic and regulatory pathways that underlie life. By bridging chemistry and biology, biochemistry explains cellular function in molecular terms. Central themes include enzyme catalysis, in which proteins accelerate and regulate specific reactions; metabolism, the integrated networks that extract energy and synthesize cellular components; and the molecular basis of physiological control, such as how hormones and nutrients modulate processes throughout the body. Biochemical analysis also clarifies how disturbances at the molecular level give rise to disease, and how compounds and nutrients exert their effects, providing the mechanistic foundation that connects basic science to clinical understanding. The discipline relies on techniques for isolating, characterizing, and quantifying biomolecules and for measuring biomarkers and enzyme activity, supporting both fundamental research and applications in medicine, nutrition, and biotechnology. Because nearly every aspect of health and disease ultimately depends on molecular interactions, biochemistry is foundational across the life sciences, informing the diagnosis of disorders, the development of therapeutics, and the broader study of how chemistry gives rise to living systems.
