Overview

Biochemical activity refers to the chemical reactions and processes carried out by molecules within living organisms, including the enzymatic reactions, metabolic pathways, and molecular interactions that sustain life. These processes drive functions such as energy production, digestion, synthesis and breakdown of biomolecules, signalling, and cellular repair, and they can be measured and characterised to understand how organisms function and how disease, toxins, or therapeutic agents alter normal physiology. Assessing biochemical activity, for example the activity of enzymes or the levels of metabolic markers, is central to biotechnology, pharmacology, and biomedical research, where it informs everything from drug development to the evaluation of natural compounds. The journal Biotechnology and Biomedical Science publishes peer-reviewed research applying biochemical and molecular methods to biological and medical questions. Relevant work in this collection includes studies of yeast-mediated bioprocesses and bio-products for biotechnological application, histological and biochemical investigation of the mitigation of chemically induced liver toxicity by plant extracts, and the protective biochemical effects of natural oils against oxidative stress in experimental models. This page gathers open-access scholarship relevant to biochemical activity, supporting evidence-based understanding of the chemical processes that underpin health, disease, and biotechnological application.
