Peripheral Vascular Disease
Peripheral vascular disease (PVD) is an umbrella term used to describe disorders of the blood vessels outside of the heart and brain. Atherosclerosis, commonly known as hardening of the arteries, is one of the most common causes of PVD. It is caused by a build-up of plaque on the walls of arteries which restricts blood flow and can lead to other serious medical conditions. PVD can lead to reduced circulation, pain, and infections, as well as heart and kidney failure. Treatment options for PVD are varied and can include lifestyle changes, medical therapy, and surgical interventions. Early diagnosis and treatment of PVD can prevent more serious medical problems and reduce disability.
