Hemoglobin A1c

Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) is a blood test used to measure the average amount of glucose (sugar) in the blood over the previous 2-3 months. It is an important indicator for people with diabetes, as it can indicate their ability to control their blood glucose levels and their risk for diabetic complications such as kidney disease and stroke. The higher the HbA1c, the higher the risk of complications. Regular testing of HbA1c allows clinicians to adjust treatment regimens to achieve optimal blood glucose control.
