Overview

Gastroenterology is the study and treatment of disorders of the gastrointestinal tract, including the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon, and rectum. These include both common and rare conditions such as acid reflux, constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, ulcerative colitis, and Crohn's disease. It also encompasses the study of nutrition, metabolism, and hepatic (liver) function. Treatment for these disorders may range from medications to surgery, depending on the type and severity of the condition. Gastroenterology is an essential field that improves the quality of life for many patients suffering from digestive disorders.
