Overview
Type 2 diabetes is a chronic and progressive metabolic disorder that is caused by an imbalance between the body’s production of insulin and its utilization of glucose, or sugar. It is the most common form of diabetes, and can lead to serious health complications, such as damage to the eyes, kidneys, or nerves. Endocrinology provides diagnosis, treatment and management of type 2 diabetes, to reduce the risk of these complications and maintain optimal health. Endocrinology techniques include diet and lifestyle modifications, medications, and insulin therapy to lower blood glucose levels, and regular monitoring of glucose levels in the blood. With endocrinology, people with type 2 diabetes can live longer, healthier lives.
