Diabetes and Endocrinology Type 1 Diabetes
Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) is a chronic health condition in which the body fails to produce adequate amounts of insulin, a hormone which plays a key role in regulating the body's glucose (sugar) levels. As a result, individuals with T1D must inject insulin daily or use an insulin pump to remain healthy and avoid serious health complications such as heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, and blindness. Despite advances in medical technology and treatments, Type 1 Diabetes cannot be cured and must be managed carefully by monitoring daily glucose levels, eating a healthy diet, exercising, and taking medication as prescribed by a medical professional. Research into the causes of T1D, potential treatments and cures, and better management of the disease continues to be a critical and ongoing effort.
