Cardiovascular Disease
Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) is a group of diseases that affect the heart and the blood vessels of the body. CVD is the leading cause of death worldwide, with 17.9 million deaths annually. It is also the leading cause of death in the United States, responsible for 1 in every 3 deaths. Major risk factors include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, smoking, physical inactivity, and poor diet. CVD is preventable through lifestyle modifications and medications, and treatments include lifestyle changes, medication, or surgery. CVD has a major economic burden on society, with an estimated economic cost of $556 billion in the US alone in 2016.
