Overview

A database is an organized collection of data stored and managed within a computer system so that it can be accessed, queried, updated, and analyzed efficiently. Databases structure information, often into tables, records, and fields, allowing large volumes of data to be stored consistently and retrieved quickly, and they form the backbone of modern information systems across science, business, healthcare, and government. In the context of big data research, databases and their underlying computing infrastructure are essential for storing and processing the massive, complex, and rapidly growing datasets that characterize contemporary analytics, supporting tasks such as data mining, pattern discovery, and knowledge extraction. Research published by the journal addresses the foundations and methods of database-driven analysis. Work includes an overview of databases and computing in big data research, a comparative study of clustering objects for spatial data mining, and research on mining frequent sequential patterns, all of which examine how data are organized and analyzed at scale. Related studies illustrate domain applications, such as developing a chronic obstructive pulmonary disease severity classification system using a health-insurance claims database. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to databases and their role in storing, mining, and analyzing large-scale data.
