Overview

Data acquisition is the process of collecting and recording information from one or more sources and organising it for analysis. It is a foundational step in scientific research and data-driven systems, providing the raw measurements from which hypotheses are tested, conclusions are drawn, and models are built. Data acquisition can involve manual entry, automated sensing and instrumentation, digital capture, and the integration of data from diverse sources, and its design directly affects the quality, completeness, and reliability of any subsequent analysis. In the era of big data, acquiring large, high-quality datasets efficiently and accurately is a central concern across disciplines. The peer-reviewed research collected here illustrates several modes of data acquisition. A study of automated grassweed detection in wheat cropping systems describes the use of automated sensing and imaging to collect agricultural data, while work on metabolomic tools for assessing environmental exposure shows how analytical platforms generate complex biological datasets. A further article on discovery and quantification in mass spectrometry–based proteomics addresses the acquisition and measurement of large-scale molecular data. Together these open-access articles span automated, analytical, and high-throughput approaches to gathering data, reflecting research relevant to the collection and organisation of information for analysis in data-intensive science.
