Overview

Big data refers to datasets that are too large, fast-moving, or varied to be processed effectively with traditional data-handling tools. It is often characterized by the "three Vs": volume, the sheer quantity of data; velocity, the speed at which data are generated and must be processed; and variety, the many different types and sources of data involved. Managing and analyzing big data requires specialized databases, distributed computing, and analytical methods, and it is increasingly used to uncover patterns, support decision-making, and drive insight across science, healthcare, business, and government. Research in this subject area addresses the foundations and applications of big data. Studies have examined the databases and computing infrastructure that support large-scale data work, the legal, marketing, and advertising issues that arise from the use of big data, and design principles for the dashboards and business-intelligence tools through which large datasets are explored. Together this work spans the technical, analytical, and practical dimensions of working with big data. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to big data and the methods, infrastructure, and considerations involved in managing and applying it.
