Overview

Artificial intelligence (AI) is a field of computer science devoted to designing systems that can carry out tasks ordinarily associated with human intelligence, including visual perception, language understanding, reasoning, problem-solving, and decision-making. In the context of large-scale data, AI is closely tied to machine learning and data mining, where algorithms learn patterns from large and complex datasets to support automated classification, prediction, detection, and knowledge discovery. The growth of big data has made AI central to extracting insight from information that is too large or intricate for manual analysis, with applications across healthcare, agriculture, public administration, food safety, and scientific research. Alongside its technical capabilities, AI raises questions of ethics, equity, transparency, and the responsible use of automated decision-making, which are increasingly treated as integral to its development. The journal publishes peer-reviewed work illustrating these themes, including AI in healthcare for efficiency, equity, and empathy, the engagement of Ubuntu ethics with artificial intelligence, AI-assisted approaches to complex creative problem-solving and knowledge management, automated detection in agricultural cropping systems, data-mining methods for analysing scientific literature, and the classification and prioritisation of administrative tasks. Together these reflect AI as a data-driven discipline spanning algorithmic methods and their practical, cross-sector applications.
