Overview

Social relations are the patterned connections, interactions, and bonds between individuals and within groups, including family ties, friendships, partnerships, and professional and community relationships. They are studied across psychology, sociology, and public health as determinants of well-being: the quantity and quality of social ties, perceived and received social support, social competence, and social integration shape mental and physical health, buffer stress, and influence quality of life, while isolation and loneliness confer risk. Social relations also structure caregiving, work, and the experience of illness, and they vary with demographic, occupational, and cultural context. Research relevant to this topic includes individual, family, and community-level correlates of mental health in cancer survivors, the dynamics of care and the pandemic care triangle among older adults, perceived social support and quality of life in social workers, the relationship between social competence and work-related behavior among health professionals, materialistic aspirations and psychological well-being, loneliness and bedtime procrastination among young adults, women's empowerment and health-system integration, and the social dimensions of medication adherence. Methods span surveys, qualitative inquiry, and cross-sectional analysis. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research on social relationships, social support, and their consequences for mental health and well-being.
