Overview

Prevention and treatment are the two complementary pillars of clinical and public health practice: prevention seeks to avert the onset, progression, or recurrence of disease, while treatment seeks to cure, control, or mitigate established illness and its consequences. Prevention is conventionally organized into primary measures that reduce incidence by limiting exposure and risk, secondary measures such as screening and early intervention that detect and halt disease at an early stage, and tertiary measures that limit disability and complications. Treatment encompasses pharmacological, behavioral, surgical, and supportive modalities and is increasingly informed by modeling, risk stratification, and harm-reduction strategies. Research relevant to this topic spans innovative suicide prevention and treatment approaches, narrative review and mathematical modeling of COVID-19 and the epidemic-control measures derived from it, intermittent preventive treatment and health-seeking behavior for malaria in pregnancy, the prevalence, awareness, and treatment of hypertension, harm-reduction programs operating within community safety policy, and the management of metabolic syndrome with antioxidant micronutrients. Methods include epidemiological modeling, surveys, program evaluation, and clinical and laboratory studies across varied settings. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research on the prevention and treatment of disease and on the behavioral and public health strategies that support them.
