Overview

Anxiety disorders are a group of mental health conditions defined by excessive, persistent fear, worry, or apprehension that is disproportionate to actual threat and that impairs daily functioning. They include generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, specific phobias, and related presentations, and they frequently co-occur with depression and other psychiatric conditions. Beyond subjective distress, anxiety disorders produce physiological symptoms such as restlessness, palpitations, breathlessness, muscle tension, and sleep disturbance, reflecting dysregulation of stress-response systems. Their development is multifactorial, shaped by genetic predisposition, temperament and personality, family environment and interpersonal relationships, and life stressors, including major disruptions such as social isolation and displacement; vulnerability and presentation can also vary across sex, age, and developmental stage. Anxiety commonly emerges or intensifies during transitional periods such as entry to higher education and across the lifespan, and it interacts with physical health, wellbeing, and suicidal risk. Assessment relies on clinical interview and validated self-report measures, with attention to comorbid mood symptoms and functional impact. Treatment is typically combined, encompassing psychological therapies such as cognitive behavioral therapy, pharmacotherapy, and supportive and complementary approaches, alongside attention to lifestyle and social context. Because anxiety disorders are common and often chronic, early recognition and access to effective, individualized care are central to reducing their burden.
