Overview
Anxiety disorders are a group of mental health conditions in which excessive, persistent fear and anxiety, together with related avoidance behavior, cause clinically significant distress and impair daily functioning. The category includes generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, specific and social phobias, and, in related diagnostic groupings, obsessive-compulsive and trauma- and stressor-related conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder. These disorders share a common substrate of heightened threat appraisal, autonomic arousal, and learned avoidance, mediated by amygdala-prefrontal circuitry and neurochemical systems including neuropeptides such as cholecystokinin. They frequently co-occur with depression and somatic illness, follow a chronic or relapsing course when untreated, and respond to cognitive-behavioral, pharmacological, and integrative interventions. Research relevant to this topic addresses postpartum mood and anxiety disorders and the support needs of parents and clinicians; the physiology of fear and anxiety; complementary approaches such as Reiki and network-pharmacology investigation of essential-oil formulations; anxiety and depression in student and clinical populations; the late and gendered recognition of conditions such as ADHD; trauma-focused therapy; and the mental-health consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic. The journal publishes peer-reviewed work on the etiology, assessment, and treatment of anxiety disorders.
