Overview
Seeds are the mature, fertilised ovules of seed plants, each comprising an embryo, a stored food reserve in the endosperm or cotyledons, and a protective seed coat, serving both as the unit of sexual reproduction and dispersal and as a major reservoir of nutrients and bioactive compounds. Seed composition, including oil and fatty-acid profiles, protein content, trace elements, and phytochemicals, underlies their value in agriculture, food, and feed, while dormancy and germination physiology govern crop establishment. Research relevant to this area characterises the physicochemical and fatty-acid composition of seeds such as barberry, trace-element measurement in apricot seeds by neutron activation analysis, and the functional properties of watermelon and pumpkin seed flours and protein isolates. Allied work addresses seed treatment for controlling Striga germination alongside sorghum growth and yield, the use of legume seeds in animal feed formulation, pharmacognostic evaluation of seed-bearing medicinal plants, and the dietary roles of coriander and other seeds. These studies integrate seed biology, food chemistry, agronomy, and nutrition to clarify how seed structure and composition determine quality, propagation, and end use. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research on seed composition, germination, and the agronomic and nutritional applications of seeds.
