Plant Growth and Development
Plant growth and development is a fundamental biological process, essential to the survival of all plants. It is the process by which a small seed grows into a mature plant capable of surviving in its environment. This process includes a wide range of activities, including germination, cell division and enlargement, leaf and stem growth, and flowering and seed production. Additionally, plants must respond to their environment in order to survive, such as reacting to changes in temperature, light and other conditions. Plant growth and development is vital for food production, for providing a biofuel source and for maintaining healthy ecosystems. Plant scientists use a range of techniques and technologies to study and better understand the processes involved in plant growth and development, including genetic engineering, and this in turn can help to increase crop production, reduce environmental impacts and ultimately ensure food security.
