Overview
Plant and medicine, or medicinal plant science, concerns the use of plants and their constituents to prevent, treat, or manage disease, and the scientific investigation of their pharmacological basis. Humans have long relied on botanical remedies, and many modern drugs derive from plant compounds, making this field a bridge between traditional knowledge and evidence-based pharmacology. Its therapeutic activity is attributed largely to secondary metabolites such as alkaloids, flavonoids, terpenoids, tannins, saponins, and other phenolics, which exert antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and hormone-modulating effects. Research typically begins with the documentation of traditional uses and proceeds through extraction, phytochemical screening, and chromatographic profiling, including thin-layer chromatography, to characterize bioactive fractions of leaves, bark, roots, and other plant parts. Pharmacological evaluation then tests these extracts for biological effects, for example antimicrobial and antifungal activity against pathogens and dermatophytes, or physiological actions assessed in animal models. This work supports the rational standardization of herbal preparations, the discovery of lead compounds for drug development, and the validation or qualification of ethnomedicinal claims. The discipline combines botany, phytochemistry, microbiology, and pharmacology, and it also addresses safety, dosage, quality control, and the reproducibility of plant-derived therapeutics within contemporary biomedical frameworks.
