Overview

Photosynthesis is the process by which plants, algae, and cyanobacteria convert light energy into chemical energy, using it to synthesise carbohydrates from carbon dioxide and water while releasing oxygen. It proceeds through light-dependent reactions in the thylakoid membranes, which generate ATP and reducing power, and the carbon-fixation reactions of the Calvin cycle, and is fundamental to the global carbon cycle, primary productivity, and the energy base of ecosystems. Photosynthetic performance is sensitive to environmental stresses such as drought, salinity, and nutrient limitation, and to the physiology of chlorophyll-bearing organisms exploited in biotechnology. The research collected here reflects these themes through studies of the industrial and biotechnological applications of algae, the effects of drought and salt stress on cereal crop plants and their proteomic and physiological responses, biotechnological applications of cyanobacteria, and the optimisation of microalgal culture for chlorophyll and biomass yield. Further work addresses redox enzymes and free-radical scavenging, the mitigation of nickel toxicity and antioxidant systems in maize, and crop physiology under varied conditions. Together they span photosynthetic physiology, stress responses, and applied algal and cyanobacterial biology. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research in plant biology, including the mechanisms, physiology, and applications of photosynthesis.
