Hypocotyl
s Hypocotyls are a part of the anatomy of young plants and are a critical part of their development. The hypocotyl is the stem of the plant that is found between the seedlings’ cotyledons (first “true” leaves) and the root. It is important for providing anchorage for the germinating seed and for transporting photosynthetic products and water from the cotyledons to the root system. In addition, hypocotyls are also able to bend in response to stimuli from gravity or light and can help influence the growth of the shoot and root system of the seedling. This process, along with their ability to transport nutrients, is essential for proper plant development.
