Overview

Osteoarthritis is a chronic, degenerative joint disease caused by the gradual breakdown of cartilage and changes in the underlying bone, leading to pain, stiffness, swelling, and reduced function, most often in weight-bearing joints such as the hips and knees. As the most common form of arthritis, it affects millions of people and represents a central concern in rheumatology, where it is understood not simply as cartilage wear but as a whole-joint disorder involving bone, synovium, and surrounding tissues, shaped by ageing, mechanical load, obesity, prior injury, and genetic and metabolic factors. Because there is no cure, clinical management combines lifestyle modification, exercise, physical therapy, weight control, analgesic and anti-inflammatory medication, and joint-replacement surgery for advanced disease. Research available through the journal focuses heavily on osteoarthritis in ageing populations, including its associations with falls, frailty, and sarcopenia, the possible role of vitamin D, and the burden of painful knee osteoarthritis. Many studies address the mental-health and social dimensions of the condition, such as depression, loneliness, and social isolation in later life, and assess interventions ranging from Tai-Chi exercise training to electromagnetic-field therapy and robotic companionship. Work from the COVID-19 period additionally examines disability, health literacy, equity, and the impact of social isolation on patients with osteoarthritis.
