Overview

Plant development is the set of processes by which a plant grows, differentiates, and acquires form over its life cycle, from embryogenesis and seed germination through the activity of meristems that generate roots, shoots, leaves, and reproductive structures. It is governed by the coordinated action of plant hormones, gene regulatory networks, and environmental signals such as light, temperature, water, and nutrient availability, which together control cell division, expansion, and fate in the apical meristems and developing organs. Developmental plasticity allows plants to remodel architecture, including root system architecture, in response to biotic and abiotic stress, and post-transcriptional regulators such as circular RNAs and other non-coding RNAs participate in these programs. Research relevant to this topic includes the emerging roles of plant circular RNAs, the response of root system architecture and root phenotype to biotic and abiotic stress, modelling of development in plant anatomy, the formation of proplastids in the apical meristem of wheat, and the effects of nutrient supply, drought, and salt stress on growth and physiology in crop species. Methods span molecular biology, anatomy and microscopy, physiological and proteomic analysis, and field and growth studies. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research on plant growth, differentiation, and developmental responses to the environment.
