Overview

Ecology is the scientific study of the interactions between organisms and their environment, including the relationships among organisms and the physical and chemical conditions that shape their distribution, abundance, and behavior. It examines processes at multiple levels of organization, from individuals and populations to communities and ecosystems, addressing energy flow, nutrient cycling, species interactions, habitat requirements, and the effects of natural and human-induced change. Ecology provides the framework for understanding biodiversity, conservation, and the consequences of environmental disturbance for both wildlife and human populations. Research in ecology spans diverse organisms and systems. It includes studies of wildlife migration, anthropogenic threats, and conservation directives, the monitoring of insect species richness and abundance in semi-arid ecosystems, and the assessment of environmental factors affecting biodiversity. Aquatic and wetland ecology is addressed through investigations of water quality, the use of bioindicator organisms to detect pollution, and factors adversely affecting fish populations. The field also encompasses the agro-ecological requirements of crops, the ecology of disease vectors and emerging infections relevant to public health, and evolutionary processes such as genetic drift, extinction, and adaptation within populations. Recurring concerns include the impact of human activity and environmental change on ecosystems and the development of monitoring and conservation strategies. By analyzing how organisms interact with their surroundings, ecology informs the management and protection of biological diversity and ecosystem function.
