Overview

Biotechnology is the application of living organisms, biological systems, and their products or processes to develop technologies and products that benefit medicine, agriculture, industry, and the environment. It harnesses cells, enzymes, microorganisms, and molecular tools to manufacture pharmaceuticals and biochemicals, improve crops, remediate pollution, and create novel materials, integrating disciplines such as molecular biology, genetics, microbiology, and bioinformatics. Modern biotechnology spans traditional fermentation-based bioprocessing through to genomic, proteomic, and computational design approaches, reflecting a rapidly evolving field with wide-ranging applications. Research in biotechnology encompasses the industrial and biotechnological applications of microorganisms, including algae, cyanobacteria, and yeast for bioprocesses and bio-products, and the use of biotechnology to address challenges such as climate change. It also includes the growing role of bioinformatics in biotechnology, computational and metabolomic approaches to disease, and in silico, in vitro, and in vivo strategies in drug design and discovery. Further work addresses molecular analysis of genes underlying metabolic disorders, cellular mechanisms relevant to cancer and tissue biology, and network-pharmacology approaches to natural product formulations. Recurring themes include the translation of biological knowledge into practical products and processes, the integration of computational and experimental methods, and applications across health, agriculture, and the environment. By converting biological capabilities into useful technologies, biotechnology contributes to advances in human health, sustainable production, and environmental management.
