Overview

Pharmaceutical studies and research encompass the systematic investigation of how medicines are designed, formulated, manufactured, analyzed, and used to diagnose, treat, and prevent disease. The field integrates medicinal chemistry, pharmacology, formulation science, and analytical methods across the lifecycle of a drug product. Formulation and drug-delivery research develops carriers and excipients that control how and where a medicine is released, illustrated by the evaluation of natural gums as novel carriers for oral colon-targeted delivery and as delayed-release coatings on solid dosage forms. Process and materials science contribute through approaches such as supercritical fluid technology used in pharmaceutical processing, while computer-aided drug design supports the rational discovery and optimization of new molecules. Pharmacological and natural-product studies assess biological activity, including analgesic and antipyretic effects of plant-derived material. Analytical chemistry underpins quality and safety, employing techniques such as mass spectrometry to characterize compounds and detect adulteration.
