Overview

Pharmaceutical research and applications is the area of pharmaceutical science concerned with translating the study of drugs and dosage forms into practical methods for developing, manufacturing, characterising, and delivering medicines. It draws on chemistry, biology, pharmacology, materials science, and engineering to design formulations that deliver active ingredients safely and effectively, and to evaluate their physicochemical and thermal properties, stability, and performance. A central focus is drug delivery and formulation: the selection and characterisation of excipients and carriers, and the design of dosage forms that control the rate and site of release. Natural polymers and gums, for example, have been evaluated as carriers and coating materials for oral systems, including colon-targeted delivery and delayed-release tablet coatings, where the goal is to protect the drug and release it at the intended location. The field also encompasses processing and manufacturing technologies, such as supercritical fluid techniques used for particle engineering and extraction, and analytical characterisation, including chromatographic and mass-spectrometric methods, that underpins the assessment of drug substances and excipients. Beyond the laboratory, it extends to the practice environment, including the delivery of pharmaceutical care and the working conditions of pharmacists that influence service quality. By connecting formulation design, materials, manufacturing, and analysis with clinical and practice needs, this domain advances the development and rational use of effective and reliable medicines.
