Overview

Animal models are living non-human organisms used in research to represent biological processes, disease states, and responses to intervention that are relevant to human or veterinary health. In pharmaceutical science they are central to evaluating the efficacy, mechanism, pharmacokinetics, and toxicology of candidate drugs and treatments under controlled conditions before clinical testing. Commonly used species include rodents and other mammals selected for their physiological similarity to humans, tractable husbandry, and, where appropriate, genetic modification that recapitulates specific pathology. Research in this area employs animal models to assess the histomorphological and physiological effects of plant extracts, to develop and test formulations such as neuroprotective agents, to evaluate analgesic and anti-inflammatory candidates, and to investigate interventions ranging from deep-brain stimulation for epilepsy to imaging-agent development and gene therapy. Such models also support biomarker discovery and the study of inflammation and infection. Their use is governed by ethical principles emphasising refinement, reduction, and replacement, and is increasingly complemented by in vitro and in silico disease models. Animal models matter because they bridge molecular and cellular findings and clinical translation, providing systems in which safety and efficacy can be examined at the level of the whole organism. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research employing animal models to address pharmacological, toxicological, and pathophysiological questions.
