Overview
Molecular biology is the branch of science that studies the molecular basis of biological activity, focusing on the structure, function, and interactions of the macromolecules that carry out life's processes, particularly DNA, RNA, and proteins. It examines how genetic information is stored, replicated, transcribed, and translated, and how gene expression is regulated within cells. The techniques of molecular biology, including nucleic acid analysis, cloning, and sequencing, underpin work across genetics, medicine, biotechnology, and the forensic and diagnostic sciences. Research available through the journal illustrates several of these themes, including proteomic and genomic techniques applied in cancer, diagnostics, and personalized medicine; the template-independent synthesis of nucleic acid libraries; the emerging roles of plant circular RNAs; and the molecular, cellular, and evolutionary biology of the RNA-binding protein RBM45. Studies on the identification of somatic mutations and the molecular characteristics of tumours further demonstrate how molecular approaches reveal the genetic changes underlying disease. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to molecular biology, supporting researchers, students, and practitioners interested in DNA, RNA, proteins, and the laboratory methods used to investigate them.
