Overview
Depression is a mood disorder defined by persistent low mood or loss of interest and pleasure, accompanied by changes in sleep, appetite, energy, concentration, and self-worth that impair daily functioning. Major depressive disorder is the prototypical form, but depressive symptoms also arise in perinatal, geriatric, and medically comorbid contexts. The condition is understood through interacting biological, psychological, and social mechanisms, including monoaminergic and neuroendocrine dysregulation, cognitive vulnerability, and chronic stress, and it is increasingly characterized using network approaches that distinguish core from peripheral symptoms. Research in this area examines depression alongside conditions such as dementia, chronic kidney disease, osteoarthritis, and executive dysfunction, where mood disturbance both reflects and worsens illness burden. Studies address postpartum depression and its links to beliefs about motherhood and perfectionism, the role of social support among persons with disability, and the influence of socioeconomic, sociodemographic, and environmental factors including noise exposure and discrimination. Populations studied include teachers, nursing students, college students, and older adults, with attention to gender differences, suicidal ideation, and apathy. Treatment-focused work evaluates behavioral management and psychosocial interventions. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research on the assessment, correlates, and treatment of depression across the lifespan.
