Overview
ADHD impulsivity is one of the core features of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, characterized by a tendency to act quickly without fully considering the consequences. It can manifest as interrupting others, difficulty waiting one's turn, blurting out responses, making hasty decisions, and trouble inhibiting immediate urges, and it affects both children and adults living with ADHD. Impulsivity in ADHD is linked to differences in the brain systems that support self-regulation and executive control, and when unaddressed it can contribute to difficulties in school, work, relationships, finances, and safety. Recognizing and managing impulsivity is therefore an important part of ADHD care, which may include behavioural strategies, skills training, environmental supports, and medication. Research published in this journal addresses this area directly, including a study titled "Trading on Impulse" that examines the role of ADHD, impulsivity, and gender in financial risk-taking and investment outcomes, illustrating how impulsive tendencies can shape real-world decision-making. Further work in the journal on building resilience in children and youth with ADHD reflects complementary efforts to support self-regulation and adaptive functioning. By clarifying how impulsivity arises and affects daily life, such research informs strategies to help individuals with ADHD manage its impact. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to ADHD impulsivity and ADHD care.
