Overview

Bipolar disorder is a mental health condition characterized by shifts in mood, energy and activity levels that can range from extreme highs (mania) to extreme lows (depression). People with bipolar disorder experience periods of significant mood distress and disruption to their daily activities that can last for weeks at a time. The condition affects both men and women, and is estimated to affect up to 1.2% of the population globally. Treatment for bipolar disorder usually involves a combination of medication and psychotherapy. The aim of treatment is to reduce the frequency and severity of episodes, and help the person to manage their symptoms and prevent relapse.
