Addiction
Addiction is a chronic condition in which a person repeatedly engages in compulsive, substance-seeking and substance-using behaviours despite the harms associated with them. It results from changes in the brain caused by regular exposure to a substance or behaviour. The condition affects people of all ages, genders and backgrounds, and is a serious public health issue. Addiction can lead to a range of physical, mental and social impairments, and can even lead to death. Treatment for addiction includes a range of evidence-based therapies, such as cognitive-behavioural therapy and motivational interviewing, as well as medications. Along with these treatments, social supports are important for improving the outcomes of people with addiction.
