Overview
Texture is the spatial arrangement and variation of surface features that gives a material or image its characteristic appearance and tactile quality. In digital image processing and computer vision, texture analysis quantifies these patterns, describing properties such as coarseness, regularity, directionality, contrast, and the statistical distribution of intensities or colours across a region. Rather than treating individual pixels in isolation, texture methods capture how values relate to their neighbours, using approaches that include statistical descriptors derived from co-occurrence matrices, frequency-domain and wavelet transforms, fractal dimension, and learned features from neural networks. These descriptors enable a surface to be segmented, classified, or compared, supporting tasks from defect detection to pattern recognition. In additive manufacturing and three-dimensional printing, surface texture is also a physical outcome of the build process, influenced by layer thickness, orientation, and material behaviour, and it affects properties such as adhesion, friction, optical finish, and mechanical performance. Texture characterisation therefore serves both as an analytical tool for interpreting images and as a quality metric for fabricated objects. Applications extend across biomedical imaging, remote sensing, materials science, and quality control, wherever the fine structure of a surface carries diagnostic, functional, or aesthetic significance that coarser measurements would overlook.
