Wuchereria
bancrofti Wuchereria bancrofti is a species of parasitic roundworms that cause lymphatic filariasis (LF), a neglected tropical disease that affects more than 120 million people worldwide. The adult worms are transmitted to humans through bites from mosquitoes, and they can cause blockages in the lymphatic system leading to opening of lymph vessels, swelling, heavy breathing and fever. W. bancrofti is one of the leading causes of disabling and disfiguring conditions in many lower-income countries. Treatment with medications such as chemotherapy and anti-parasitic drugs are used to control and treat LF, but prevention of W. bancrofti transmission is the key strategy. This includes public health measures such as vector control and improved sanitation, as well as mass drug administration.
