Trypanosoma
cruzi Trypanosoma cruzi is a parasitic organism that is transmitted by insects and is responsible for Chagas disease. It inhabits the gut or muscle tissue of its vertebrate host, depending on the stage of its life cycle, and causes a wide range of disease symptoms. It has been estimated that up to 10 million people are infected with Chagas disease worldwide, making it an important public health concern. Recent advances in research have uncovered the mechanism of how the organism interacts with its host and how it is transmitted, and highlighted the potential for new treatments and vaccines. Clinical trials of some of these treatments are currently underway.
