Strongyloidiasis

Strongyloidiasis is a parasitic infection caused by the nematode (roundworm) Strongyloides stercoralis. It is particularly common in tropical areas, such as Southeast Asia, Africa, and the Caribbean. Symptoms may include diarrhea, abdominal pain, and eosinophilia. In severe cases, Strongyloides can cause sepsis, a life-threatening condition, as well as hyperinfection which can result in organ failure. Prompt treatment is required to reduce the risk of complications. It is treated with anti-helminth medications such as albendazole, ivermectin, and thiabendazole. Good hygiene practices, such as washing hands and protective clothing, can decrease the risk of infection.
