Lions
Lions, the majestic big cats of the genus Panthera, are iconic symbols of strength, courage and leadership. Found in sub-Saharan Africa and parts of Asia, they are the most social of cats, living in prides of up to 30 individuals, though most pride members are related. Males are easily recognized by their thick manes, which protect them from bites and blows from other males during mating and territorial fights. They are apex predators, meaning they are at the top of their food chain and have no natural predators. Lions are important for the health of their ecosystems and help to maintain a balance of prey species. They are also a popular attraction for ecotourists and are featured in many zoos, wildlife parks and other wildlife conservation areas.
